🍎 Enjoy the natural sweetness and fresh flavors of homemade apple cider made with a balanced mix of sweet and tart apples.
πŸ”₯ This slow cooker recipe is easy to follow and fills your kitchen with warm, comforting aromas perfect for any season.

  • Total Time: 8 hours 30 minutes
  • Yield: About 1.5 quarts

Ingredients

– 10 medium apples, a mix of sweet and tart varieties

– 1 orange, peeled and segmented

– 4 cinnamon sticks or 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

– 1 teaspoon ground cloves or 2 teaspoons whole cloves

– 6 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjustable between 1/4 cup for less sweetness and 1/2 cup for more sweetness)

– Water sufficient to cover the fruit in the slow cooker (typically around 1 2 liters, depending on the slow cooker size)

Instructions

1-Getting Started with Your Ingredients: Begin by gathering and prepping your ingredients to ensure a smooth cooking process. This step, often called mise en place, helps you stay organized and avoid any last-minute rushes. For this apple cider recipe, start with peeling and segmenting the orange, then quartering the apples while discarding the cores.

2-Once prepped, add everything to your slow cooker. This includes the apples, orange segments, cinnamon sticks or ground cinnamon, ground cloves or whole cloves, sugar, and enough water to cover the fruit. A 4-quart or larger slow cooker works best for even cooking.

3-Cooking on low heat for 6 to 7 hours allows the flavors to develop deeply, or you can use high heat for about 4 hours if you’re short on time. Low heat is recommended for a richer taste, drawing out the natural juices from the fruit.

4-Mashing and Straining for the Best Results: After the initial cooking time, remove the cinnamon sticks if used, and mash the softened fruit with a sturdy spoon or masher. This releases more flavor and natural juices, making your cider even more delicious. Return the cinnamon sticks to the mixture for an extra hour of cooking to intensify the aroma.

5-Once that’s done, strain the liquid slowly through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a heat-safe container. Straining twice helps remove any solids for a smoother consistency, resulting in about 1 and 1/2 quarts of fresh apple cider.

6-Serve it warm for immediate enjoyment, or store it in the fridge for 5 to 7 days. You can reheat it or enjoy it cold, depending on your preference. The total prep time is about 20 minutes, with cooking taking around 8 hours on low or 4 hours on high plus extra time.

Notes

🍯 Adjust sugar levels to taste or substitute with honey or brown sugar maintaining the same sweetness ratio.
❄️ Freeze leftover cider in ice cube trays for convenient individual servings.
🌿 Experiment with additional spices like nutmeg or ginger for a unique flavor twist.
