– 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream for whipping into the topping
– 2 tablespoons powdered sugar to sweeten the whipped cream
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for flavoring the whipped cream
– 2 to 4 tablespoons cherry liqueur such as cherry brandy optional to drizzle and moisten the cake, or substitute with cherry juice for a non-alcoholic version
– 500ml cherry compote enhances the dessert’s flavor with additional tartness
– 400ml whipped cream balances the tart cherries with a creamy texture, though this is made from the heavy cream above
– 100g dark chocolate shavings offers a deep chocolate flavor and attractive garnish
– 200ml kirsch cherry brandy to moisten the sponge for an authentic taste, if not using the optional liqueur
Instructions
1-Prepare all ingredients: Cut the 300g chocolate sponge cake into one-inch cubes from a 9ร13-inch pan, and have your 2 cups of chocolate pudding or custard ready, along with 1 to 1.5 cups of cherry pie filling. Donโt forget to whip the topping by mixing 1 cup (240 ml) of heavy cream with 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until it forms stiff peaks. This step takes about 20 minutes total, plus any baking time for the cake.
2-Building the Layers: Now, letโs assemble. Begin by placing half of the cake cubes at the bottom of a trifle bowl. Drizzle half of the 2 to 4 tablespoons of cherry liqueur over them for extra flavor, or use cherry juice if you want to skip the alcohol. Next, add half the chocolate pudding, followed by half the cherry pie filling, and then half the whipped cream.
3: Repeat the layers with the remaining cake cubes, liqueur, pudding, cherry filling, and whipped cream, ending with whipped cream on top. Once done, chill the trifle for at least one hour or overnight to let the flavors meld together.
4: Before serving, garnish with fresh cherries, shaved chocolate, chocolate sprinkles, icing sugar, or cocoa powder to make it look inviting. If youโre adapting for dietary needs, the same steps work just swap ingredients as needed.
Notes
๐ฐ Use store-bought or homemade cake depending on time for convenience.
๐ฅ Drizzle cherry liqueur or cherry juice for added depth and moisture.
๐ฆ Chill the trifle well to allow layers to meld and enhance flavors before serving.
