  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

– 2 tablespoons of olive oil (divided)

– 6 bratwurst sausages (about 1 1/4 pounds or approximately 567 grams)

– 1 sliced red onion

– 1 tablespoon of minced garlic

– 8 ounces (about 227 grams) of quartered portobello mushrooms

– 1 sliced green pepper

– 1 sliced yellow pepper

– 2 Gala apples cut into 1/2-inch-thick wedges

– 1/2 teaspoon of salt

– 1/4 teaspoon of pepper

– 1/4 teaspoon of fresh minced sage

– 1/2 cup (120 ml) of chicken broth

Instructions

1-Preheat your oven: preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) to get everything ready for that final touch.

2-Brown the bratwurst sausages: heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat and brown the bratwurst sausages for about 6 minutes, turning them occasionally until they’re nicely seared. Once done, set the sausages aside to rest. This step builds that crave-worthy flavor you love in a good bratwurst dinner.

3-Cook vegetables in the skillet: add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil to the skillet and cook the sliced red onion for 1 minute until it starts to soften. Stir in the sliced green and yellow peppers and cook for 3 minutes until they’re tender. Then, toss in the quartered portobello mushrooms and minced garlic, cooking for another minute to let those aromas blend.

4-Season and add apples: Season the mix with 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of fresh minced sage for that extra zing. In a separate pan, quickly sauté the Gala apple wedges until they’re just soft, then add them to the skillet. Return the bratwursts to the pan, pour in the 1/2 cup of chicken broth, and mix everything well to combine.

5-Final cooking in the oven: transfer the skillet to the oven and cook for about 10 minutes until the sausages reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) and the vegetables are tender. For a juicy result, cover the skillet during the last few minutes to retain moisture. If you’re hosting, this bratwurst dinner yields six servings, making it ideal for family meals or gatherings with friends.

Notes

🍺 Soak bratwursts in beer for 6 to 24 hours before cooking to enhance flavor.
🌡️ Use a meat thermometer to ensure bratwursts reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
🍳 Cooking in a cast-iron skillet yields the best flavor and heat retention.
