(Optional for variation) 1 1/4 cups milk (300 milliliters)
(Optional for variation) 1 teaspoon cocoa powder

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F (or 375Β°F for high altitudes). Grease a 9×9-inch baking pan.
2. Cream together 1 stick softened butter and 3/4 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
3. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 egg; mix well.
4. In a separate bowl, whisk 2 cups flour, baking powder, and salt.
5. Add half the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, then 3/4 cup milk, and then the remaining dry ingredients; mix just until combined.
6. For the filling, combine 3 tablespoons softened butter, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, 1/2 cup flour, and 1/2 cup brown sugar to create crumbs.
7. For the topping, mix 5 tablespoons softened butter, 3/4 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1 tablespoon cinnamon until coarse crumbs form.
8. Pour half the batter into the pan and spread evenly.
9. Sprinkle the filling crumbs over the batter.
10. Add remaining batter over the filling and spread carefully.
11. Sprinkle the streusel topping over the batter and press lightly.
12. Bake for 45-50 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
13. Cool in pan on wire rack before serving.
14. Optional: swirl the filling into the batter before baking for a marbled effect.

Notes

🍴 Use an offset spatula to spread the batter evenly and easily.
🧈 For a richer cake, reduce flour in the topping slightly and increase butter.
πŸ₯› Add sour cream or yogurt to the batter for extra moisture and tenderness.
