🌶️ It’s a delicious and satisfying dish perfect for a quick homemade takeout experience with tender chicken thighs and a luscious glaze.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

– 2 pounds chicken thighs, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces

– 1/2 cup cornstarch

– 1/4 cup vegetable oil for frying, plus more as needed

– 2 tablespoons minced ginger (from a 2-inch piece)

– 3 cloves garlic, minced or grated

– 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes adjustable to taste

– 1 teaspoon sesame seeds optional, for garnish

– 1/2 cup cold water for the sauce

– 5 tablespoons soy sauce for the sauce

– 3 tablespoons rice vinegar for the sauce, or more to taste

– 1 1/2 tablespoons hoisin sauce for the sauce

– 4 tablespoons sugar for the sauce

– 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch for the sauce

Instructions

1-Getting General Tsos Chicken just right: starts with simple steps that anyone can follow, even if you’re new to the kitchen. First, cut the chicken into 1-inch cubes and toss with cornstarch in batches, shaking off excess to get that crispy coating. This helps the chicken fry up golden and delicious without getting soggy later. Set it aside while you prepare the rest.

2-Next: combine all the sauce ingredients in a bowl and whisk them together until mixed. This includes 1/2 cup cold water, 5 tablespoons soy sauce, 3 tablespoons rice vinegar, 1 1/2 tablespoons hoisin sauce, 4 tablespoons sugar, and 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch for thickening. Preheat a non-stick skillet with 1/4 cup vegetable oil, then cook the chicken in small batches until it’s golden brown and cooked through, which takes about 5-7 minutes.

3-After removing the chicken: use the same pan to sauté the garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the sauce mixture and bring it to a simmer, stirring as it thickens and the vinegar mellows out. Taste and adjust with more soy sauce or rice vinegar if needed to balance the flavors. Finally, toss the chicken back in to coat it thoroughly and serve hot, perhaps with sesame seeds on top for extra flair. The whole process takes just 15 minutes prep and 15 minutes cook time, totaling 30 minutes, so it’s perfect for a quick meal.

Notes

⏰ Prepare all ingredients beforehand as the cooking process is fast.
🌶️ Adjust red pepper flakes to your preferred spice level.
🍗 Avoid overcrowding the pan when frying to keep chicken crispy and cook evenly.
