  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups sugar

1 3/4 cups flour

3/4 cup cocoa powder

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

2 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

1/2 cup vegetable or canola oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup boiling water

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup butter

3 large egg yolks

3/4 cup evaporated milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 cup chopped pecans

1 cup shredded coconut

1/2 cup butter

2/3 cup cocoa powder

3 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1-Getting started with this German chocolate cake involves a few key steps that make baking fun and straightforward. Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare two 8 or 9-inch round baking pans with grease and parchment paper for easy release. This simple setup helps ensure your cake layers turn out just right.

2-In one bowl, mix the dry ingredients: 2 cups sugar, 1 3/4 cups flour, 3/4 cup cocoa powder, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda, and 1 teaspoon salt until well combined. In another bowl, blend the wet ingredients: 2 large eggs, 1 cup buttermilk, 1/2 cup vegetable or canola oil, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Then, combine the mixtures and stir in 1 cup boiling water to thin the batter before pouring it evenly into the pans.

3-Bake for 25 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, then let the cakes cool briefly in the pans before moving them to wire racks. For the coconut frosting, cook 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 3 large egg yolks, and 3/4 cup evaporated milk over medium heat until thickened, then stir in 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, 1 cup chopped pecans, and 1 cup shredded coconut. Cool it completely before use. The chocolate frosting comes together by melting 1/2 cup butter and mixing in 2/3 cup cocoa powder, then adding 3 cups powdered sugar, 1/3 cup milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until spreadable.

4-To assemble, spread chocolate frosting on one layer, add half the coconut frosting on top with a border, stack the second layer, frost the outside with chocolate frosting, and finish with the remaining coconut frosting. This process results in a stunning cake that’s ready to enjoy, with tips like checking for doneness early to keep it moist.

Notes

🎂 Use parchment paper to easily remove cakes from pans without damage.
🥄 Stir coconut frosting constantly to avoid burning and achieve perfect thickness.
🍫 Be gentle with the hot boiling water addition to avoid splashing and batter overworking.
