  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups sugar

1 3/4 cups flour

3/4 cup cocoa powder

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

2 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

1/2 cup vegetable or canola oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup boiling water

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup butter

3 large egg yolks

3/4 cup evaporated milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 cup chopped pecans

1 cup shredded coconut

1/2 cup butter

2/3 cup cocoa powder

3 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1-Let’s dive into baking your German chocolate cake with simple steps that anyone can follow. Start by preheating your oven to 375Β°F and greasing two 8 or 9-inch round pans with parchment paper for easy removal. In a large bowl, mix the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until they’re well combined.

2-Next, in another bowl, whisk the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract. Pour this wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently, then add the boiling water to make the batter thin and smooth. Divide the batter evenly into your prepared pans and bake for 25 to 35 minutes, checking with a toothpick to ensure it’s done.

3-Once baked, let the cakes cool in the pans for 5 minutes before moving them to wire racks. For the coconut frosting, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, butter, egg yolks, and evaporated milk in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens and gently boils, then remove from heat and mix in vanilla extract, chopped pecans, and shredded coconut. Cool it completely before use.

4-As for the chocolate frosting, melt the butter and stir in cocoa powder, then gradually add powdered sugar and milk while beating until it’s spreadable. To assemble, place one cake layer on a plate, add a thin layer of chocolate frosting, followed by half the coconut frosting, leaving a small edge. Top with the second layer, cover with the remaining chocolate frosting, and finish with the rest of the coconut frosting. This method keeps the cake layers moist and full of flavor, just like a classic German chocolate cake should be.

Notes

πŸŽ‚ Use room temperature ingredients to achieve the best texture.
πŸ₯₯ Toast the pecans and coconut lightly if you prefer a deeper flavor.
❄️ Both frostings can be made ahead and refrigerated; bring to room temperature before use for easier spreading.
