  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

– 1 pound (about 450 grams) uncooked penne pasta

– 1 tablespoon olive oil

– 1 pound (about 450 grams) lean ground beef (90% lean or higher)

– 1/2 medium onion, chopped

– 1 clove garlic, minced

– 1.5 cups (about 360 ml) marinara sauce or any tomato-based pasta sauce

– Salt and pepper to taste

– 1.5 cups (about 170 grams) shredded cheddar cheese (preferably freshly grated from a block)

Instructions

1- Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (205Β°C) and grease a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.

2- Boil a large pot of salted water and cook 1 pound (about 450 grams) of penne pasta for about 10 minutes, slightly undercooking it to keep it from getting mushy.

3- In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil; add 1 pound (about 450 grams) of lean ground beef and 1/2 chopped medium onion, then sautΓ© over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes, breaking up the meat as it cooks.

4- Add 1 clove minced garlic once the meat starts browning; drain any excess fat if needed.

5- Stir in 1.5 cups (about 360 ml) marinara sauce and warm through; season with salt and pepper to taste.

6- Drain the pasta and mix it into the greased baking dish.

7- Pour the beef mixture over the pasta and toss to combine evenly.

8- Top the casserole with 1.5 cups (about 170 grams) shredded cheddar cheese.

9- Bake uncovered for 10 minutes until the cheese melts.

10- Optionally, broil for a few minutes to get a browned cheese topping.

11- Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.

Notes

🍝 Slightly undercook pasta to maintain good texture after baking
πŸ₯© Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or Italian sausage if preferred
πŸ§€ Use freshly grated cheese from a block for better melting and flavor
