Ingredients
– 2 Β½ cups all-purpose flour (self-rising flour can be substituted; omit baking powder if using self-rising)
– 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional, to reduce acidity from buttermilk)
– 1 tablespoon aluminum-free baking powder
– 1 ΒΎ cups buttermilk (can increase to 2 cups if batter seems dry)
– 2 cups small diced ham (such as leftover ham, deli ham, or ham steak)
– 1 Β½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (other options include Swiss, Mozzarella, Provolone, White Cheddar, or Pepper Jack)
– Β½ cup (1 stick) salted butter (use real butter, not margarine)
Instructions
1-First, preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and spray an oven-safe glass or ceramic 8Γ8 or 9Γ9-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. This step ensures even baking and prevents sticking.
2-Next, in a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and aluminum-free baking powder to get your dry ingredients mixed well.
3-Then, add the buttermilk and stir until a sticky batter forms; add a little more buttermilk if the mixture is too dry. Gently fold in the diced ham and shredded cheddar cheese to distribute the flavors evenly. For variations, you can try different cheeses as suggested in the tips.
4-Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl or directly in the baking dish. Pour the melted butter into the prepared baking dish, then add the biscuit dough on top and spread it evenly using nonstick spray on your hand makes this easier. Cut the dough into 9 squares to help separate the biscuits after baking.
5-Bake on the middle oven rack for 25-30 minutes, rotating the dish once halfway through. If the top browns too quickly, cover with foil to avoid burning. The biscuits are done when they’re golden brown, spring back when touched, and a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let them cool slightly before slicing and serving for the best results.
Notes
π Substitute ham with turkey, roast beef, or chicken for variation.
π§ Try different cheeses to customize flavor.
π³ Use nonstick spray on your hand for easier dough spreading.
