Ingredients
– 6 hot dogs
– 1 package crescent roll dough (approximately 8 ounces)
– Edible candy eyes
– Ketchup and/or mustard
Instructions
1-Step 1: Prepare Your Oven and Baking Sheet Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This temperature allows the crescent dough to bake through completely while heating the hot dogs to a safe internal temperature. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking. If you don’t have parchment paper, a light coating of cooking spray works too.
2-Step 2: Prepare the Crescent Dough Unroll the crescent roll dough onto a clean, flat surface such as a cutting board or countertop. If using perforated dough, press the perforations together to seal them, creating one solid rectangle. This step is important because it prevents your mummy wrappings from separating during baking.
3-Step 3: Cut the Dough Strips Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the dough into strips approximately 1/4-inch wide. Cut from top to bottom (the long side) to create longer strips that wrap around the hot dogs more easily. Keep the strips uniform in width for the most realistic mummy bandage effect.
4-Step 4: Wrap Each Hot Dog Take one hot dog and begin wrapping a dough strip around it, starting from one end. Stretch the dough slightly as you wrap and overlap each layer to create the bandage effect. Leave small gaps between some wrappings to give it that authentic mummy appearance. The gaps also become the perfect spot for adding eyes later.
5-Step 5: Arrange on Baking Sheet Place each wrapped hot dog on your prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between them. This allows air to circulate and ensures even browning on all sides. If you’re making a large batch, you may need two baking sheets.
6-Step 6: Bake Until Golden Brown Bake the mummy hot dogs for 10-12 minutes. Watch for the dough to turn golden brown and puff up slightly. The hot dogs inside will cook fully during this time, reaching the proper internal temperature of 165°F. If your oven runs hot, check them at the 10-minute mark.
7-Step 7: Add the Finishing Touches Remove from the oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes. This brief cooling period prevents the candy eyes from melting. Attach edible candy eyes using a tiny dot of ketchup or mustard as glue. If you don’t have candy eyes, simply draw eyes directly on the mummy using ketchup or mustard. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.
Notes
🐶 Use uncooked hot dogs as they fully cook during baking for juicy results.
👁️ Dab ketchup or mustard to secure candy eyes securely.
🍕 Swap crescent dough for pizza dough but watch cook time closely.
