– 2 cups all-purpose flour (284 grams)

– 1 teaspoon baking powder

– 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

– 3/4 teaspoon sea salt or table salt

– 2 teaspoons cinnamon

– 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

– 1/4 teaspoon cloves

– 4 cups peeled, cored, and 1/4-inch diced apples (about 468 grams)

– 1 tablespoon lemon juice

– 1 cup granulated sugar (210 grams)

– 1/4 cup packed light-brown sugar (58 grams)

– 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (113 grams)

– 2 large eggs

– 1/2 cup milk for topping (optional)

– 1/4 cup pecans (optional)

– 1/2 cup unsalted butter, diced into 1 tablespoon pieces (113 grams) for the sauce

– 1 cup packed light-brown sugar (220 grams) for the sauce

– 1/4 cup milk for the sauce

– 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt or table salt for the sauce

– 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract for the sauce

Instructions

1-Getting started with this old fashioned warm apple cake: Begin by preheating your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and spraying a 13 by 8-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray to ensure nothing sticks. This simple step sets the stage for a flawless bake every time.

2-Next, in a medium bowl, whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 3/4 teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon cloves for about 20 seconds; set it aside. In another bowl, toss 4 cups of diced apples with 1 tablespoon lemon juice to keep them fresh and flavorful.

3-Then, in a large bowl, use an electric mixer to whip 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup packed light-brown sugar, and 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter until it’s pale and fluffy. Beat in 2 large eggs one at a time, and on low speed, slowly add the flour mixture until just combined the batter will be thick at this point.

4-Folding and Baking: Once mixed, add the apples and stir just until everything comes together, then pour the batter into your prepared baking dish and spread it evenly. Bake for 33 to 38 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Let the cake cool for about 5 minutes before cutting it into squares.

5-For the sticky brown sugar sauce, combine 1/2 cup diced unsalted butter, 1 cup packed light-brown sugar, 1/4 cup milk, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a medium saucepan. Bring it to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally, and let it boil for 1 1/2 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and let it cool slightly before drizzling over the warm cake. Serve with optional pecans and milk for an extra treat.

Notes

๐Ÿ Use a mix of tart and sweet apples (e.g., Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Gala) for best flavor.
๐Ÿฎ Prepare the sticky brown sugar sauce just before cake finishes baking to serve both warm together.
โ™จ๏ธ If the sauce crystallizes after cooling, reheat gently and whisk until smooth.
