🌭 This Sausage Stuffed Stromboli With Peppers and Onions Recipe combines savory Italian sausage, tender peppers, and onions for a hearty and flavorful meal.
🍕 It’s an easy-to-make stuffed bread that offers a delicious way to enjoy classic Italian flavors in one satisfying dish.

  • Total Time: 2 hours
  • Yield: 8 slices

Ingredients

– 16 ounces pizza dough

– 1 teaspoon olive oil

– 1/2 medium onion

– 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced 1/4 inch thick

– 1/3 cup spicy tomato sauce

– 2 Italian chicken sausage links (total weight: 5.5 ounces, casing removed)

– 3/4 cup part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese

– 1 egg white, beaten

– Optional: sesame seeds for topping

Instructions

1-First, prepare the pizza dough and let it rest for 1 hour. This helps it become easy to work with. Next, cook the sausage in a skillet until it’s browned, then set it aside to cool.

2-Then, sauté the onion in 1 teaspoon of olive oil until it softens. Add the sliced red bell pepper and 1/3 cup spicy tomato sauce, then simmer covered for 15 minutes until tender. Let this mixture cool completely before you move on.

3-Preheat your oven to 500°F and place it on the center rack. Oil a sheet pan to prevent sticking. Roll out the dough into a 16×10 inch rectangle on a floured surface.

4-Assembling and Baking Spread the cooled pepper-onion mixture over the dough, leaving a 1.5-inch border around the edges. Top it with the cooked sausage and 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese. Brush the edges with the beaten egg white to help seal everything.

5-Fold the long sides over the filling first, then fold the short ends and pinch to seal. Place it seam-side down on the prepared pan. Cut a few slits on top for steam to escape, brush with more egg white, and sprinkle sesame seeds if you like.

6-Bake at 500°F for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat to 375°F and bake for another 18-20 minutes until it’s golden brown. For ideas on similar dishes, try this onion and pepper kielbasa recipe for a tasty variation.

7-Let it cool a bit before slicing into 8 pieces. The total prep time is about 10 minutes, cooking takes 50 minutes, plus 1 hour for dough resting, making the whole process around 2 hours.

Notes

🌟 Dough can be made ahead and undercooked by 10-15 minutes; cover with foil and reheat later.
🍗 Substitute chicken sausage with turkey sausage, ground turkey with Italian herbs, or turkey pepperoni for variation.
🥛 Omit cheese for a dairy-free version or use any type of marinara sauce to adjust spice level.
